The Mary Stigall Initiative
At a time when there wasn’t much going on in the arts, and far from the urban centers where the arts flourish, Mary Stigall had a vision for Lake City that was the driving force for starting Lake City Arts. It was to be all-inclusive, multi-dimensional, multi-generational, community centered, and most of all—FUN!
Mary brought her writing and theatre background to our small mountain town and got to work. She made a virtue of necessity, teaching writing and theatre workshops. She was able to inspire self-confidence in people and to help them develop their talents in acting, music and writing, and later, the visual arts. From the trail-blazing work that Mary did, Lake City Arts has become a major asset in our community, presenting plays and music, establishing visual arts programs and classes for adults and children, writing workshops, arts fairs, and so much more.
It is vital for the future of Lake City Arts to continue Mary’s legacy and keep her vision alive. In order to do this, LCA is celebrating Mary’s contributions by establishing a legacy fund in her name. These funds will be used to support a theatre professional who will spend time in Lake City each summer and during the school year at Lake City Community School as an acting coach and director, something near and dear to Mary’s heart. In order for this to succeed we need to have all of Mary’s friends and colleagues contribute to this endeavor.
